Does the end-of-line appliance exemption cover an inline shower filter?

3 November 2026ComplyMatrix Research
No. The exemption requires three elements at once: an appliance connected at the end of the installation, one that the technical rules do not treat as part of it, and water downstream of a necessary safety device. An inline filter meets none of them.

Does the end-of-line appliance exemption cover an inline shower filter?

Short answer

No. The exemption in § 1(2) No. 4 is narrow, and it exempts water — not the product.

Basis

The exemption needs an end-connected appliance that is not part of the installation, plus a necessary safety device TrinkwV § 1(2) No. 4

English: water downstream of the safety device of an end-connected appliance that the technical rules do not treat as part of the installation.

The mirror provision moves the point of compliance, it does not remove it TrinkwV § 10(2)

What to verify

An inline filter is in the flow path, has no safety device, and is not treated as an external appliance by DIN 1988-100 or DIN EN 1717. If a supplier argues the exemption, ask which safety device is installed and where the compliance point then sits.
